“A genuine map doesn't exist, for there isn’t a type of description which is truly dependable”
- Chong Kim Chiew
Chong often uses maps as the foundation for his works, he explores the division of territories, power structures that determine them, and the trends of historical patterns, and re-displays them through the lens of an objective observer. If the viewer were to compare works within the New-Write Map series to a real map, they will find that there are many paradoxical misplacements in these new maps, such as the interchanging of ocean and land, the misplacements of the names of places, and so on. Chong's misplaced maps explore how power relationships between regions can change and reinterpret a map and the depiction of such areas with consideration to their histories and other variables.
