The odyssey of a PhD candidature truly begins with narcissistic injury. It begins with a systematic reduction of one’s ego, until self-inadequacy is norm. Self-esteem and confidence reach an all-time low: every word you utter is subject to scrutiny; every statement you make is a façade and farce. Imposterism creeps in. Nonetheless, there are still many whose ego is less wounded. Some, having overcome the tribulation, take it as offense when not being addressed with their doctorate honorific. Such odd insistence is either a self-therapy for justifying their past intellectual flagellation as deserving, or, that their ego remains completely intact, in which case, their candidature has not expired.
