As the culture of “staying-at-home” and “working-from-home” becomes axiomatic after the Covid-19 pandemic, home is now the new battlefield, the site of tension and conflict. Division between the public and the personal slowly dilutes as workspace and bed, pantry and kitchen, meld into one another. The gendered division of labour, too, lies at the crossroads of virtual meetings, care work, and paperwork. They often add up, instead of being divided evenly. With this new mutation of home, there is no longer a space to return to for consolation and support. Work-life balance acquires a new insignificance as home becomes unhomely, uncanny, restless. At home, mental illness, domestic and relationship abuse, soar. The sacred space for rest is too fragile for the demands of a career. Home, once construed as the spatial antithesis of work, now embraces professionalism and transmogrifies into a self-regulated prison house. One is no longer restricted by steel bars or handcuffs, but by screens and keyboards. Welcome to this pseudo-home, where work intrudes into home life, where work is presumably flexible, but in actuality, internalised. Wakefulness is the new nine-to-five.
