Thuy Anh Dang
The three oil paintings on paper above are part of a series of 9 paintings called "A day out" under a long-term project called "Chot Mong Tan" conjures up a kaleidoscopic world of Dang Thuy Anh — a labyrinth that takes root from her memories, imagination, and obsession. Thuy Anh uses sketching as a daily ritual in this body of work, a spontaneous performance that captures the essence of her thoughts and emotions immediately when she wakes up every morning. She embraces the rawness and immediacy of the moment through this method, enabling each image to take shape without the confines of preconceived notions of meaning or composition.
Dreams, it is believed, reflect the subconscious; perhaps this series of paintings depicts Thuy Anh's hidden corners, honest monologues with the two words "What if," or those appointments with no set time and place that she continued thinking about every morning. And the truth is never too gleaming; in contrast to the first six works, which appear tranquil and quiet, this trio reflects the artist's struggle with bipolar disorder and traumatic experiences combined with primordial love.
