Ella Wijt’s works are an interpretation of personal experience, mythology, and womanhood, expressed through painting and site-specific installations. In the studio, she may question, doubt, and become through an intuitive process of open conversations. Such a process involves moving between memory and possibility, a narrative that reveals itself as the artist begins to lay out forms, lines, colours, and composition.
In these five paintings, she draws inspiration from a Japanese haiku, a simple poem capturing the essence of our daily lives. They find solace in stillness and modesty; elements float gracefully and never in a rush, and when nature is depicted it is always in a state of becoming. Wijt’s paintings offer us a panacea to the dynamic pace of the city, as spaces for working within and towards a freedom of imagination.
