The room bears witness to the intimate and the personal. It silently observes life within its walls. The spaces we inhabit—our homes, our rooms, our sanctuaries—are filled with the weight of our lived experiences. And yet, despite their quiet endurance, these interiors are often overlooked and relegated to the background. It is in these moments of being overlooked that the genre of painting interiors—intérieur—emerges, offering us another way to see, that is through the rooms we occupy or leave vacant.

We see Leaving Room as a natural continuation of vertical submarine’s ongoing series of installations; particularly A View With A Room (2009) where a hidden chamber was transformed into a monochromatic space resembling a black-and-white photograph, as well as John Martin (2015) where the sense of isolation was heightened through the adoption of the same patterned carpet from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), evoking an uncanny sense of familiarity, further deepening the installation’s surreality. A View With A Room was awarded the President’s Young Talent (2009, Singapore) and Celeste Prize (2011, New York). Leaving Room focuses on archetypes of the art world as seen with The Gallerist awake in his hotel room during an Art Fair (2024) to An Art Collector sleeping in his Hotel Room (2024). Similar to the transformation of space in previous installations, A View With A Room and John Martin, Leaving Room transforms the art booth into a prison cell, inviting viewers to experience the same feelings of entrapment as the depicted characters.
