Chong Kim Chiew Malaysian, b. 1975
In his latest iteration of Boundary Fluidity at Busan Biennale, Chong insists on the
monumentality of the tarpaulin maps; thirty pieces are hung in three columns, each
divided into eight rows. The viewer here is dwarfed by the sheer scale of the series
and the space it inhabits, forced to crane their neck upwards but also to gradually
shift their gaze below as the arrangement cascades to the floor. The installation
expands to consider not only interior space but the surfaces that envelop it; five
silver tarpaulins lay across the roof of the Pier 1 warehouse of Busan Port, once a
gateway connecting Busan to the outside.
