I have thinking about making this work for many years, finally finding a skilled technician
who would work with me to complete the job. This is a songkok form, made of brass, that
is closed at both ends, a metaphor for both a gender and ethnicity represented by people
who are intolerant of change, difference and vulnerability. My grandfather owned a brand
of songkok’s in Singapore and Johor when I was a child, worn frequently by my father, who
even after his passing reminds me of the condition this work represents.
