Taman Kenangan is a critique of mega development
projects – funded by state and private sectors which claim to preserve local
culture, heritage and the environment. My objective is to highlight the
disruptive projects that are occurring in Malaysia, housing developments which
are displacing indigenous tribes in Selangor, land reclamation projects in
Penang (a culturally and historically significant island in the straits of
Malacca) the Forest City development in between Johor and Singapore, and now-
abandoned Melaka Gateway project which has created devastating effects to the
livelihood of fishermen and coastal area. The locations of these developments
are strategically determined to capitalise on their historic and geographic
qualities.
