In last year's 'Studies of Chinese New Villages, I completed a review of the historical archives and literature related to Chinese new villages. One of their functions is to serve as a quide for viewers to understand this subject. As I move into the second phase of this series, I want to transform these new village landscapes into something reminiscent of genre painting. In doing so, I will draw from Chinese cultural customs and beliefs, texts, folk aesthetics, and combine them with my on-site travel notes and images as a descendant of immigrants. Gradually, I will piece together a hazy collective memory and conduct a spiritual analysis of the Chinese newcomers in these new villages.

Furthermore, these spiritual landscapes may also respond to the issues of race and identity that politicians have been keen on exploiting in recent decades: What do Chinese people really want? What are Chinese people really thinking?'
