Jo Tanierla Philippines, b. 1989
Jo Tanierla is a visual artist and a labor rights advocate. His drawings, paintings, and texts expound on the many ways imperialism invades the Philippines, on how it commands the economic, political, and cultural systems of the archipelago. The works also articulate an organized resistance to imperialism's chronic crises and systemic oppression, focusing on a class-oriented mobilization with a socialist perspective. Tanierla’s first solo exhibition, Pagburo at Pag-alsa: Natural Depictions and Illustrated Prophecies (Gelacio, 1910) (October 2020), was one of three winners of the 2021 Ateneo Art Awards - Fernando Zobel Prizes for Visual Art. In 2009, he won the Shell National Students Arts Competition watercolor category. In 2017, he was a National Finalist for MADE’s (Metrobank Art and Design Excellence) Painting Recognition Program. Tanierla is also a member of the national democratic cultural mass organization Tambisan sa Sining.
