Agus Suwage Indonesia, b. 1959
Vox Mortis – Vox Orbis
depicts the figure of Frida Kahlo, a recurring figure in his practice. Suwage is drawn
to Kahlo not only be her beauty and her work, but also by her strength. Despite the
hardships in her life — battling a lifelong disability and a tragic romantic life —
Kahlo continued to paint from her bed. Drawing on Christian imagery, Kahlo’s
topless body is pierced with arrows, marking her as the figure of suffering, pain, and
oppression.
